Alliance India Country Representative Dr Jai Rana and Partnerships Officer for South Asia Sonal Dsouza joined about 150 scientists and researchers from 14 countries during the International Scientific Conference on Plant Genetic Resources: Opportunities and Challenges held on 22-24 May in Tbilisi, Georgia.
Organized by the Scientific-Research Center of Agriculture (SRCA), in collaboration with the Georgian Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the National Botanical Garden of Georgia, the event provided a platform for knowledge exchange with participants discussing various facets of plant genetic resources (PGR), including exchange, conservation, management, and utilization for sustainable agriculture.
Jai Rana highlighted innovative approaches in integrating agrobiodiversity in his presentation on ‘Mainstreaming Agrobiodiversity for Enhancing Climate Resilience, Nutrition, and Livelihood’. His talk focused on the use of PGR in agricultural practices to bolster climate resilience and improve nutritional outcomes and livelihoods.
Also in attendance were Deputy Ministers of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Iuri Nozadze and Solomon Pavliashvili who both highlighted the significance of PGR at both the national and international levels, while SRCA Director Levan Ujmajuridze gave the opening remarks.
At the end of the conference, the insights shared by these distinguished speakers were expected to inspire further research and collaboration in the field of plant genetic resources, paving the way for innovative solutions to global agricultural challenges.
