The International Seminar on 'Exotic and Underutilized Horticultural Crops: Priorities & Emerging Trends' was held at ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru, from October 17-19, 2023. The event was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Governor of Karnataka, Shri Thaawarchand Gehlot, in the esteemed presence of Professor Dr. Sanjay Kumar Singh, Director, ICAR-IIHR, Bengaluru; Dr. N.K. Krishna Kumar, Former Deputy Director General (Horticultural Sciences), ICAR; Dr. J.C. Rana, Country Representative, Alliance of Bioversity International; and Dr. V.B. Patel, Assistant Director General (Fruits and Plantation Crops), ICAR.
Seminar Objectives and Key Highlights
The seminar aimed to raise awareness among farmers and stakeholders about cutting-edge technologies for the sustainable production of exotic and underutilized horticultural crops. The significance of horticultural crops was underscored, as their production has increased 14-fold from 25 million tonnes in 1950-51 to around 350 million tonnes, surpassing food grain production.
In his address, Governor Shri Thaawarchand Gehlot highlighted India’s potential to excel in agriculture, horticulture, and dairy production, envisioning the nation’s rise as a Vishwaguru (global leader).

The seminar witnessed the participation of 400 delegates, including representatives from America, Australia, the UK, Israel, Malaysia, Mexico, Korea, and Zambia. Among the attendees were:

The delegates hailed from 24 states and represented 71 universities, showcasing a rich exchange of knowledge and expertise. The strong presence of farmers and entrepreneurs further reinforced the seminar’s practical relevance and impact on the horticultural sector.
