Strengthening Seed Systems in the Northeastern and Unreached Regions: Problems, Prospects, and Policies

The National Seminar on “Strengthening of Seed Systems in the Northeastern and Unreached Regions – Problems, Prospects, and Policies” was held in Imphal, Manipur, from February 3-5, 2019. The event brought together experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss challenges and opportunities in seed production, quality control, and distribution in these regions.

In his inaugural address, Chief Guest Shri Y. Joykumar Singh, Deputy Chief Minister of Manipur, emphasized the importance of selecting seed varieties best suited to local climatic and weather conditions to ensure economic viability for farmers. He stressed the need for collaborative efforts between the state government, ICAR institutes, and CAU, Imphal, to strengthen seed certification and testing systems.

The seminar concluded with a resolution to develop a policy paper and roadmap under the aegis of the Indian Society of Seed Technology, New Delhi, aimed at establishing a sustainable and efficient seed production, quality control, and marketing system for the region.
